Elkfest started a decade ago as an adjunct to ArtFest: just a few bands playing on a small stage at The Elk in Browne's Addition while arts and crafts were on display in Coeur d'Alene Park. However, it grew steadily every year. Eventually, the neighborhood got so crowded that Elkfest was finally moved to a different weekend, as it was fully self-sufficient by that point. Now, thousands of people pack into the temporarily blocked-off stretch of Cannon St, between 2nd and Pacific Ave, to witness three days of local and touring artists. Who is behind all of this? John Blakesley has been the organizer, picking out the bands and making everything work out. He's also a local musician, leading Spokane band Hey! Is For Horses. This Sunday, June 1st, John and producer Matt Loi will chat all about Elkfest and spin album tracks from various artists on the 103.1 KCDA Local Lounge.
