Art is a fickle thing.  How does one go about "getting into it," as either a creator or an appreciator?  With the contradicting stereotypes of art being either a lofty, sanctimonious tradition or a shocking, iconoclastic attention-grabber, the real meanings get lost: personal expression and connection.  The organizers of Terrain seek to correct this with the first-ever Bazaar outdoor art fest on Saturday, June 21st at the corner of Wall & Main in downtown Spokane.  Up-and-coming local artists get to present and sell their works, with no distinction between the so-called "high art" and "low art," and keep all their profits.  This accommodation extends to the art patrons, as every artist will have items available for under $100.  It's free to the public and all ages are welcome.  The result: artists win, art buyers win, and community ties are made and strengthened.  Bazaar is an extension of the flagship Terrain festival, an arts exposition on the first Friday of October, which started in 2008.

Of course, there's more to art than visual media.  Several local bands (and a couple touring performers) will fill the aural canvas of Bazaar with some rock, folk, and electronic sounds.  Platform Booking's Patrick Kendrick has been active in the Spokane music scene for years and loves to support such cutting-edge performers.  These musicians will sell their merchandise at the event, too.  With 50+ booths of visual art and 8 live bands, plus children's activities, food trucks, and a beer garden, there's really no better way to spend a day in Spokane.  This Father's Day, Terrain's Luke Baumgarten and Ginger Ewing will talk all about the visual side of Bazaar, while Matt Loi will spin album tracks from the performing musicians.  Several of these recordings are hot off the master tapes (or hard drives) of local studios, so those will make their broadcast debut this Sunday, June 15th at 10 pm on the 103.1 KCDA Local Lounge.
