Denver Broncos Name Spokane Native Brett Rypien Starting QB

Spokane native Brett Rypien is going to start at quarterback Thursday night for the Denver Broncos.

The Shadle Park standout will be behind center when the Broncos visit the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football.

Denver head coach Vic Fangio informed Rypien of the decision Monday.

Rypien will be the third starting quarterback for the winless Broncos. Drew Lock started Denver's first two games, but suffered a right shoulder injury in Week Two against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 24-year-old starred and started for the Highlanders for all four seasons of his high school career. By the time he graduated, he had set Washington state records for career passing yards, pass completions and owned single-season records for passing yards and touchdowns.

Rypien graduated early from Shadle Park as a 4.0 GPA student, earning valedictorian honors.

He went on to star at Boise State where Rypien started as Broncos quarterback for all four seasons from 2015-2018.

His uncle, Mark Rypien, also starred at Shadle Park, then Washington State and played for the NFL Washington Redskins.
